"Beautiful Girl"

"Beautiful Girl, You can do hard things"

The poem "Don't Quit" (posted below) has been in circulation for years, decades, maybe even longer.  It has been credited to numerous pens and authors. It has helped many people get through trying times. Many people have claimed it as their own over time. And like many, it has a deeply personal motivating factor to it.

When I was a child, this poem hung as a poster in my mother's bedroom. It was on the back of the wooden door, and you could only see it if you were inside the room, with the door closed.  I never noticed it as a young child, but as I got older, and adolescent trials came my way, that poster guided my heart through some troubled waters.

There were times I would sneak into her room, when she wasn't home, and read those challenging words over and over to myself.  They would lift my soul and spirits back up to The One who was in control of all things.  They helped put a spark of tenacity into my being, causing me to keep going, even today, no matter what life throws at me.

Life didn't hand me a smooth journey, nor did it to my dear mother either. I often ponder, when I read this poem now, how it much it must have motivated her through the times when there wasn't much money in the bank and less food on the table.  How she always managed to get up each morning and make sure we had all we needed to be successful each day, even despite ourselves, is beyond me.  But her courage and tenacity to face each day, head on, no matter what went wrong, no matter how high the hill, no matter how dark the storm, has helped me to see the rainbow in the silver lining, the light at the end of the tunnel, and the One who created all things.

Let me leave you with this poem to inspire and encourage you today. May it embolden you to lift up your head, dust off your rear, and keep on keeping on.

Don't Quit
When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit-
Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is strange with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns,
And many a fellow turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow -
You may succeed with another blow.

Often the goal is nearer than
It seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
When he might have captured the victor's cup;
And he learned too late when the night came down,
How close he was to the golden crown.

Success is failure turned inside out -
The silver tint in the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It might be near when it seems afar;
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit -
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
